Sunday Mornings, Starting January and After9:30 AM Sundays


Bible Study: on-going class at 9:30 AM Room 206; teacher: Tricia Carter; contact: Pat Jenkins (752-7896, [email protected]); in-depth study of the Bible considering literary, cultural and historical issues to help interpret meaning and application to the daily experience of our Christian faith. On November 20, we began a study of the virginal conception and birth of Jesus, the story upon which we found our faith and life as Christians. This 8-session, video-based series by Dr. James "Mickey" Efird provides comparative information on all four Gospels, and teaches the background, circumstances and environment of Jesus' birth as told in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew.


Faithweavers: on-going class at 9:30 AM Room 205; teacher: Patrick Portman; contact: Julie Gneuhs (658-5200, [email protected]); an open group primarily of parents with young children and diverse viewpoints, who enjoy thought-provoking, respectful discussion about the Bible and Christian faith; we learn and grow together, and enjoy each other’s company; all welcome!

Spiritual Gifts Discovery: 3-week class, 9:30 AM Room 303, starting 4/29/12; teacher and contact: Sheila Brown (522-9050, [email protected]); explores three questions: What are spiritual gifts? What are mine? What can I do with them?; includes a spiritual gifts survey, reflective meditation and group discussions with the goal of discovering your gifts and God’s call for your life. Wesleyan Traditions, hosted by First Friday Sunday School class: on-going class at 9:30 AM Room 113; teacher: various; contact: Ron Purdon (871-3374, [email protected]); various Wesleyan topics such as what United Methodists believe, contributions of John Wesley and Social Principles of the UMC will be presented by knowledgeable teachers, including pastors and seminarians; contact Ron for schedule of topics and teachers. Christian Living Short Courses: on-going class, 11 AM Room 303; teacher: Michael Vilardo; contacts: Joyce Bates (232-0698, [email protected]) or Mary Pearce (231-4197, [email protected]); group formed for those in the Baby Boomer generation, though all are welcome to join in exploring how our lives and faith meet the challenges we encounter on the way.

New Horizons: on-going class, 11 AM Room 113; teacher: various; contact: Roberta Peebles (321-2412, [email protected]) or Rudy Heath (489-2164, [email protected]); intergenerational group having fun growing together in our faith, typically using video-based short courses, with a focus on life application and supporting one another. We have fun serving together when our church hosts IHN.

Soul Builders: on-going class, 11 AM Room G-205; rotating leadership; contact: Ronda Deel (871-7965, [email protected]). We study a wide variety of materials, with a preference for high-quality video studies by well-respected theologians. A wide variety of denominational backgrounds and theological positions keep discussions lively and informative. On November 27, we began N. T. Wright’s “Jesus: The New Way.” After this series, we’ll study Adam Hamilton’s “24 Hours That Changed the World” for Lent. All sessions are open to anyone who would like to visit or join our class. We have at least two service projects, lead roles for all of the tasks of Thanksgiving Baskets and adopt-a-family at Christmas, and two social gatherings each year.



Tuesday Evening Lenten Programs, 2/21/11 through 3/20/11 Catered meal for the whole family from 6 – 7 PM in the Little Theater; then programs starting at 7 PM. Gospel of Mark: 7 – 8:30 PM in the Welcome Center; on 2/21, Reverend Dr. David Watson, United Theological Seminary Dean, will lead us in a study of the Gospel of Mark; David Watson teaches New Testament and Greek at United Theological Seminary. His interests include the Gospel of Mark, the Bible and disabilities, and theological interpretations of scripture. He participates both in the Society of Biblical Literature and the Wesleyan Theological Society. As Academic Dean, Dr. Watson oversees the academic program of the school and is a member of United’s Executive Staff.   Register here

Invitation to the New Testament: 7 – 8:30 PM Room 206; 4/3-5/22 teacher: Anne Householder; contact: Lisa Foley (871-0815, [email protected]); this study by Disciple Bible Study uses Matthew's Gospel as a starting point and explores how the new Testament writers and the early Christian community wrestled with the coming of Jesus---his life, actions, mission, death, and resurrection---and the implications of his arrival for their lives and their communities of faith; moving through the Gospel of Matthew sequentially, the overarching themes from this story of Jesus provide the conversation topics for each session; each theme is then traced through other related passages in the New Testament; students are invited to join this conversation, to study afresh this story of Jesus, and to learn more about their calling to discipleship and to community; Register here

End of Life Transitions: 4-week class in the Welcome Center, 4/3 – 4/24/12; discussion from a Christian perspective of issues we must deal with before going to be with the Lord; speakers will address burial choices, funeral plans, wills, living wills, Hospice, and how to keep our loved ones from feeling overwhelmed with details at this difficult time; this class will help us plan ahead. Wednesdays Going Deeper: on-going gathering on Wednesdays 10 – 11:30 AM, Room 113; contact: Christine McHenry (321-2804, [email protected]); a weekly contemplative prayer experience using the scripture texts for the upcoming Sunday; each session is “stand alone”.

The Way of Prayer: 12-week class Wednesdays 7 – 9 PM Room 113, starting 2/29/12; teachers and contacts: Christine McHenry (321-2804, [email protected]) and Sharon Michaelson (761-5571, [email protected]); part of the Companions in Christ series, this study will lead the group on a journey into the heart of prayer, including exploring the nature of prayer and a number of prayer forms; consider this both a group and individual “prayer laboratory”. Small Groups Connect in the Middle: join other adults as we deepen our faith and connection with each other, our community and our church. Connect in the Middle is a group for people in "the middle"...juggling the demands/joys of children, aging parents, careers, and a real connection with Christ. Most in the group are in their late 30s, and 40s and 50s, though our group is not limited by age. There are a number of ways you may participate: class and small group study opportunities; service opportunities and fun social events. Choose any or all of these. Discipleship Groups: these small groups are an excellent opportunity to develop in-depth caring relationships with 8-to-12 adults who meet together regularly for at least 18 months to study, worship, pray, fellowship, support one another, and serve in and outside the church.
