What We Believe

Mission and VisionOUR MISSION

• Mission of the UMC is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world (The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, paragraph 120-124, pages 87-89).

• Purpose of HPCUMC is to:
Welcome all people into our faith community:
Help each other grow closer to Christ;
Share God’s love in service to others.

OUR PRIMARY TASK

We will seek to create arenas where people have significant, life-changing experiences of God through Jesus Christ and where people can and will make a significant difference in the community, the city, and the world.

This is based upon the primary task of the local church as described in paragraph 243 of The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church 2008. The primary task is “reaching out and receiving with joy all who will respond; encouraging people in their relationship with God and inviting them to commitment to God’s love in Jesus Christ; providing opportunities for them to seek strengthening and growth in spiritual formation; and supporting them to live lovingly and justly in the power of the Holy Spirit as faithful disciples.

SCRIPTURAL FOUNDATIONS OF OUR MISSION AND MINISTRY

• Matthew 22:36-40 - The Great Commandments (Love God and Neighbor)
"…'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

• Matthew 28:16-20 - The Great Commission (Know Christ)
"…Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

• Ephesians 4:11-16 - A Model for Ministry (Serve God and Neighbor)
"The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ…"

• Galatians 5:22-25 - A Measurement for Ministry (Evidence of ministry)
"…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit."
